We are a bit behind with all these double headers and the trade deadline looming. Here is a recap of last Saturday.

Both teams played hard in the first. It was surprising to see this much effort exerted in a  12PM game. I guess its getting close to playoff mode. Sunny Basi scored first. He took a shot, rebound spilled out and he showed great effort to get his own rebound and put it away. Then he scored again 3 minutes later. Gakhal took a shot, rebound went near the slot area, Sunny Basi cut in and took a low shot. Goal. 3-0 after All India converted on the PP. Sim passed it across to Harminder, a weak shot on net but rebound fell to Andy Grewal who cleaned it up. Fun Park finally woke up. Kurran Kaura scored from the slot from Pukhraj and Sunny Nerval. Then Sam Punian made things interesting by converting off a nice passing play between him and Armanjot. 3-2 but that is as close as they would get. All India wins 3-2.

No goals scored in the first. Solid defensive positioning can be blamed for that. 15 minutes left, Navu is mucking it up in the crease, goes turnaround backhand to give ERC the lead. 2 minutes later, Zee Abassi ties it up. A clean faceoff win from Mano Sidhu, slap shot top shelf. Rocket. This one required OT. In OT, captain Bob Banga finished off a nice passing play to give Telus the win. 2-1 in OT. Shots were 29-12 for Telus. Balraj Khosa was lights out this weekend and stole points for his team while his captain was away.

Gallo must win almost every game they have to steal that final playoff spot. They looked like a team capable of doing just that today. They were up against a Hot Shot team that was also playing for something but today belonged to Gallo. Sunny Khaira scored on the first play of the game, got sprung on the breakaway and converted. This should have deflated Gallo but on the following shift Akash Thind got it back. Assisted from Rajan Dhami and Joe Sangha who have developed some quick chemistry as linemates. Joe scored one soon after, shot from the slot which went upstairs. 2-1 Gallo at half.  Sawan Dhaliwal scored making it 3-1. And this game was dusted after Dhami scored shorthanded going forehand backhand on the deke. 4-1. Gurinder Sanghera from Sunny Khaira and Prabh Thind to make it 4-2. And Amir Bains scored the 5th goal, empty netter. 5-2 Gallo.

Both teams played solid defensively. It was very tough for either team to generate much offence. A minute left in the first half, rookie Gurjyot Arora scored on the PP. Left alone by the goalie, he lifted it upstairs. Assisted by Gurpreet Bhangal and Jason Deol. But that is all Pizza 38 could generate. Art Homes was carried offensively by their captain. Sukhman Thind scored a natural hat trick and all 3 of their goals. One was seconds after a P38 penalty expired, deflection. The other was on the PP a point shot from the blue line and finally the third was an empty netter. Game. Pizza 38’s special teams continue to let them down.

I don’t think any team wants to meet either of these teams in the first round. Both can play very sound hockey when they have their horses. Eyes scored first, Sunny Matharu cleaned up a rebound on the power play. Assisted by Amit SIngh and Khalil Juma. JJ got it back for DI. Deflection on the PP. Eyes got another one from Arshil Ahmed. This rookie picks corners and water bottles. Snipe show. Considering not much separated these teams, we weren’t surprised when Jesse Virdee scored to make it 2-2. OT didn’t solve anything. In the shootout, all of Tajvir, Parm and Khalil shot and missed for Eyes. For DI, JJ scored and Robie Brar missed. DI wins in shootout. 3-2.
