12: Gallo vs Pizza 38

Two evenly matched teams squared off to start week 5. In the early going, Gallo had P38 hemmed into their zone with a relentless forecheck. P38s best offensive chance was dumping it in for icing. Sunny Atwal, aka Gurbechkin, got Gallo on the board first. Man’s hot right now. 3 goals in 2 games. Prior to this he had 2 points in 14 career PBHL games. To all the rookies out there, keep working on your game. Results will come.

The goal was caused by chaos infront of the net, and a loose ball was snapped in.

Gallo scored again with just thirty seconds left in the first half. A good breakout. A defender passed it along the line, the winger slipped it to a streaking Sunny Khaira who picked it up just inside the blue line, turned on the jets and went forehand, backhand on the breakaway. Good finish by Khaira. 2-0 at half.

That woke P38 up. They started playing better, started drawing penalties and the tide had shifted.

Gagan Khaira scored first. Took a nice feed from behind the net and made no mistake.

Then Gallo got into some penalty trouble and Akash Mehta made them pay. Twice. Do not leave this guy alone in the slot area. He is money. After two similar goals P38 is down 3-2 with 4 mins left.

The last four minutes were very exciting. Gallo gave everything they had but couldn’t solve goalie Gurpreet Rai. Gallo then drew a penalty and pulled their goalie with two minutes left, desperate to salvage a point from a game where they lead 2-0 at half.

They scored with one minute left to tie it up. Deep Sangha found Jas Sadhra with a cross ice pass, he waited for the defender to dive, walked around and snapped it bottom right.

OT didn’t enjoy many chances. Shootout it is.

Gallo shot first. Sunny K miss. P38 sent out Vineet Kanwar, goal. Deep Sangha miss. Shaun Atwal miss. Jas Sadhra miss. P38 wins 4-3 in shootout.

1: Fancy vs Go Kia

This was a fairly one-sided tilt and only a game because goalie Raj Grewal had to work extra to keep Go Kia in it. Fancy took a total of 35 shot to Go Kia’s 15. 35 shots is a season high. Could be a record.

But in the early going, no one could score.  Finally, with a minute thirty left in the first half, it was Go Kia that drew first blood. Ram Soos did very well to pick off a breakout pass from Fancy’s defender in his own zone. He found Sarb Bath who had acres of space. He didn’t need it. He took the pass first time, slapped it over the shoulder of Joe Sandhu. 1-0 at half.

It was not until 10 mins into the second half that Fancy saw something for their onslaught of shots. It started by a heavy forecheck from Fancy, Kanny Sandhu worked to cause a turnover and found Amit Mann all alone in front of the net, Amit did well to put it top cheese with very little room seperating him and the goalie.

About a minute later, Hinda floated a shot on net that fooled the goalie. 2-1 Fancy. Was that it for Go Kia? No.

With 2:38 left, Harminder Atwal dumped the ball in near the blue line. He ran after it, apparently everyone else was just chilling and the dump in took a lively bounce of the boards and Harminder hit it first time post and in. 2-2.

This game was destined for OT. But it didn’t get there. With 39 seconds left, Arjun Dhaliwal got the ball near the left blue line. His team was doing a line change. He thought fook it, might as well try something. So he beat a guy then went west to east towards the middle of the slot area with speed. He wristed it just over the goalie’s shoulder and under the bar. Fancy wins. No points for Go Kia. Heartbreaker.

2: HS vs ACH

Both teams were very happy to see each other on the schedule. Combined, they had one win.

This matchup was fairly even. Shots were for 24-20 for HS and it was HS who scored first. It was a nothing play, Sam Punian who’s had success with deep range efforts took a shot from close to half that tripped up the goalie. 1-0.

Three minutes later, Mahmoud Mahfouz walked a couple feet from the blue line and slapped it past the goalie. 2-0. Sandeep Gill from Sam and Mahfouz made it 3-0.

This game was basically over until Joty Atwal tipped a Waqas point shot on the PP to make it 3-1. They were scratching and clawing for another one but HS was resilient. ACH took two penalties with 5 min left and couldn’t score again. 3-1 HS. ACH lads looked defeated and deflated. Sukhman Thind with no wins after 6 games must be looking to move some bodies to create a spark.

We were correct! The bodies were Jody and Armanjot. They got shipped for Robie Brar and Amanvir Sanghera later that week. First trade of the season.

3: All India vs Vacuums

Two of the stronger teams this year clashed. Vacuums wants to be the team to give AI their first L. Kal Sahota scored first. He must have been watching the Go Kia game where Harminder Atwal scored the exact same goal. Dumped it in, chased after it, got there first, first time shot, post and in.

All India scored to tie with just 3 mins left in the half. Navi Grewal took a feed from Ashish Singh and sniped.

In the second half all was level until Vacuums took some penalties. They gave AI a 5-3 and AI made them eat it. First one was scored by Gakhal, a rebound came to him, he swiped at backhand and put it upstairs. The second was also scored by Gakhal, from Shaun Atwal and Goldy. This 5-3 changed the game.

Vacuums made it interesting with 3:49 left in the game, offensive zone faceoff was won cleanly back to Karan Dhaliwal. He sniped through the goalie. 3-2.

Anoop Sahota scored an empty netter to put this game to bed. 4-2 AI.

4: Eyes vs DI

Eyes was very short benched. Missing many names.  Dhillon Insurance took advantage and peppered Eyes with 33 shots. Eyes took 16. Kudos to Balraj Khosah who stole a point for Eyes.

The first goal was scored by Sunny Brar 8 minutes into the game. Shot was saved, rebound came to his backhand and he tallied.

Second goal was a shot by Sanjay Sarker 4 mins later. Slapshot in.

2-0 at half, you would think DI would continue their strong play vs a depleted and gassed Eyes but no, they fell asleep and it almost cost them.

3 minutes into the second, a DI player broke his stick, with the temporary advantage, Amir Bains got the ball into the slot and shot. Goal. Amir now has goals in his last three games. Well done.

With 8 minutes left Jesse Sohi was sprung on a breakaway. He went backhand forehand to tie this one up. That is how regulation ended. OT didn’t solve anything. We went to a shootout which was very lengthy because the goalies played great.

None of the first 6 shooters for either team scored:

Eyes: Amir/Harjot/Greg/Jso/Buddy/Vin/;

DI: Amiraj/Sanjay/Navi/Sunny B/ Nav Dhillon/ Prabh.

Then Harvey for Eyes missed. Young buck Milan Sahni stepped up and scored for DI saving them the 2 points.

See you next week.
